Visit us at Waterbeach

Schools and colleges

Schools and colleges in Cambridgeshire can visit the education centre, giving them an opportunity to inspire and challenge children and students to think positively about waste.

The centre has a classroom and a composting activity room, where we run free and fun interactive sessions. Groups can also see our recycling machines in full swing as part of their visit or do a tour of the site,  which includes our Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant, composting areas, Material Recycling Facility (MRF) and landfill site.

The education centre is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and all visits must be booked in advance.  To book a visit please contact is on 01223 815490 or email wasteeducation@amey.co.uk

The following useful information will help you plan your visit:

  • The maximum group size we can take in the education centre is 35 people, which includes adults
  • We can only accept Year 1 classes and above
  • You must organise your own transport to the site
  • Once you are onsite, we can provide minibus transport for groups of 16 people or less. For larger classes schools must organise their own coach.
  • On arrival please come to the reception area of the main building, which is clearly signed
  • To ensure you stay safe during your visit, adults and children will have to wear high visibility vests and hard hats when touring the site – we will provide these
  • There are no catering facilities on site but packed lunches can be eaten in the education centre
  • Disabled parking is located directly in front of the reception entrance
  • The education centre is compliant with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act and a hearing induction loop is installed. Other parts of the site do not have these facilities.

Community visits

We are keen for everyone to discover more about what happens to their waste and how we can recycle more.  Visits and tours of our site are open to the whole of the Cambridgeshire community and are free.

Community groups, councils, schools and businesses can arrange a group visit to the site for free.

Booking for both the group visits and the drop in sessions is essential and you can contact us on 01223 815490 or email wasteeducation@amey.co.uk

The following information will be helpful when planning your group visit:

  • Group visits can be arranged between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday
  • The minimum group size is six people. Individuals and smaller groups can attend drop in sessions each month.
  • You must organise your own transport to the site
  • The maximum group size we can cater for is 16 people, as the tour will use our own minibus. However, if groups provide their own transport for use on site, we can extend this to 35 people.
  • For health and safety reasons we are unable to allow children under six years old on group site visits
  • Disabled parking is located directly in front of the reception entrance
  • The education centre is compliant with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act and a hearing induction loop is installed. Other parts of the site do not have these facilities.
