Technology overview

Allerton Waste Recovery Park will bring together three state-of-the-art technologies – Mechanical Treatment, Anaerobic Digestion and Energy from Waste - to treat ‘black sack’ waste collected from homes across North Yorkshire and the City of York.

We are unique in bringing together these proven, tried and tested technologies together under one roof to enable us to provide a comprehensive approach which makes the most out of everyday rubbish.

Together, the technologies will increase the amount of recyclable materials which are removed from the waste and will cut the amount of waste being sent to landfill in the county by at least 90%.

The Anaerobic Digestion and Energy from Waste treatment combined will generate around 28MWh electricity per year. Some of this will be used to power the facility and we will export around 24MW to the National Grid – this is enough to power the equivalent of 40,000 homes – that is similar to the number of homes in a town the size of Harrogate.

The technology at Allerton Waste Recovery Park is modular in its design, comprising two parallel lines both with a capacity of 20 tonnes per hour. Use of two operating lines allows the facility to remain operational if maintenance is required to one of the lines.
